Sandra Fomete
President
Sandra is a fourth year Ph.D. candidate in the Chemical Engineering Department. Originally from Cameroon, she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M University. Her research interests include the characterization and modeling of key atmospheric reactions to provide a better understanding for how aerosol particles help cool the planet and offset greenhouse gas warming. She hopes to contribute to the development of green manufacturing processes which will lessen greenhouse gas warming
Joan R Nkiriki
Vice President
Nkiriki is an energy enthusiast from Uganda with a passion for inclusive development. Joan is currently a third-year Ph. D. student in Engineering and Public Policy Department with a research focus on energy and climate sustainability. Joan was recently awarded a 2019 Steinbrenner Institute Doctoral Fellowship and 2020 Presidential Fellowship in the College of Engineering at CMU, for her research in sustainable energy development in Sub-Saharan Africa. She graduated with a Master’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University Africa, in Rwanda.
Uchechukwu (Uche) Agwu
Treasurer
Uche is a mechanical engineering PhD student from Denver, Colorado. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with a minor in aerospace engineering from Santa Clara University in 2018. He received his master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2019. As a GEM Fellow at Carnegie Mellon, Uche conducts research on the structural mechanics and computational design and analysis of lattice structures. His goal is to generate light and stiff lattices for additive manufacturing applications within the aerospace industry.
Keith Phuthi
V. Treasurer
Keith is a second year PhD student in the Mechanical Engineering Department from Zimbabwe. Keith did his undergraduate studies in Physics with a minor in Mechanical Engineering at MIT. His interests and research are focused on improving energy storage devices with a main focus on computational materials modeling and discovery at the atomic scale. He also has a strong interest in teaching, education policy and curriculum design at all levels.
Dr. Judith Uchidiuno
Social Chair
Judith is a Learning Science and HCI researcher with a PhD from Carnegie Mellon’s HCI Institute. She is extremely passionate about low-resourced communities, and how cost-effective and accessible technologies can be used to improve the quality of formal and informal education they receive. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher with CMU’s National Robotics and Engineering Center and she helps kids understand how players and player-programmed robots can work together to accomplish in-game goals.
Michael Dornu Kitcher
Academic Chair
Michael is a 3rd year PhD student in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering. A 2019 GEM Associate Fellow, he studies chiral magnetic structures in multilayer thin films with potential applications in efficient computer memory and processing. Prior to graduate school, he completed his Bachelor of Science in Materials Science & Engineering at MIT. Although he’s still figuring out his career ambitions, Michael’s currently interested in developing better spintronic materials to solve energy-related problems, as well as promoting materials science and engineering education in sub-Saharan Africa. Beyond the grad student life, Michael loves playing the piano and singing with his church; reading and watching interesting stories; and engaging with people through games and conversation. For Michael, home home is Ghana, but he’s glad to have found family in Massachusetts and in Pittsburgh. artichoke.

Lynn Kirabo
Mistress of the Web
Kirabo is passionate about envisioning afro-centric technology futures. To this effect, her research explores the intersections of context and technology design. She completed her MS in Information Technology at Carnegie Mellon University – Africa and a Bachelors in Information Technology at Makerere University Kampala, in Uganda. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Human Computer Interaction and is from Uganda.
